Is there any better way to celebrate our 50th independance by asking everyone around about there best memories, hopes and wishes for the next 50 years? I am overjoyed by the amount of good spirited messages I received and how well written your answers are. Everytime I get a minute (on my very busy schedule, yeah. everyone must know by now…) I come here and read the great stories you shared. I wished more people in Madagascar and around the world could learn from your experiences and see how lucky and hard-working we are. If you want to participate in this very long thread, please post your answers to these 3 questions on the comment section. But for now, let’s enjoy our time !

Who are you?
I was born in Toliara 28 years ago, but I’ve lived outside Madagascar for the last 20 years, with the occasional (now, it’s more like every 5 years) vacation back home. Because of my father’s work, we moved around Africa in the 90s, and I eventually got my IB in a boarding school in Malta, before coming to the USA. I am currently a PhD candidate in Biochemistry on the East coast.

What have been your best memories of life in Madagascar so far?

I remember living in Toamasina (c.1988) and running around hopitaly kely as if the whole campus was our backyard…mofo-akondro on the other side of the fence…swimming lessons at the Neptune…yaourt sy mofo-katsaka prepared every 2 weeks in the courtyard of St. Joseph Filles …
More recently, I have great memories of family vacations in Morondava, Mahajanga…

How do you see our country in 50 years??

Hopefully much better than where we are right now…I think it’s tragic that we have so much to offer but we have been misled for so many years!

What are you willing/planning to do to have a better life or to reach your goals in life?

I do not take lightly the opportunities that I have been given through education, and I hope that by continuing to work hard, I will contribute to the science community, or better yet, the world.

I totally have faith in your “do not take lightly opportunities through education” motto. You don’t know where it might take you…maybe back home…sa ahona???
